What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is a well-known contraceptive injection that contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, a form of the hormone progestin. It’s administered every three months and works primarily by suppressing ovulation, preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.

Commonly referred to as the Depo shot or DMPA, this birth control method has historically been valued for its safety, convenience, and privacy. By preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, it significantly reduces the chance of pregnancy.

What are Meningiomas?

Meningiomas are primary tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), originating in the brain or spinal cord. Symptoms vary based on the tumor's location and may include:

  • Vision changes
  • Hearing or smell loss
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Morning headaches

Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and clinical trials.

While meningiomas are mostly benign, they can still cause serious symptoms. Surgery is often the first-line treatment, even for elderly patients, though it carries some risk of complications.

Recent Research & Response from the Drug Manufacturer

A population-based study published in the British Medical Journal on March 27, 2024, found an association between prolonged use of the medroxyprogesterone acetate injection (150 mg) and an increased risk of developing intracranial meningiomas that may require surgery.

In response to the study suggesting a connection between Depo-Provera and tumors, Pfizer acknowledged the concern. The company stated, "We are aware of the potential risks associated with long-term progestogen use and are working with regulatory agencies to update product labels and patient information with appropriate language."

Sadly, for many patients who have already experienced complications related to the drug’s possible connection to brain tumors, this warning comes too late.

Pharmaceutical companies are legally required to ensure their prescription drugs and medical devices are safe, defect-free, and meet FDA regulations. Unfortunately, this standard isn’t always upheld. Due to negligence, mistakes, or even fraud, some companies market products that put consumers at risk.

At Laminack, Pirtle & Martines, our pharmaceutical litigation team believes that drug manufacturers must be held accountable when their unsafe products cause harm.
