What Is Breast Mesh?
Breast mesh is a surgical material implanted inside the chest to reinforce breast tissue, support breast implants, or help maintain breast shape during reconstructive or cosmetic procedures.
Originally developed for hernia repair and soft-tissue reinforcement, surgical mesh products were later marketed to plastic surgeons for use as an “internal bra.” These devices were intended to provide long-term support after procedures such as breast reconstruction, augmentation, or breast lift surgery.
Despite these claims, many women have reported serious complications, sometimes requiring additional surgeries or ongoing medical treatment.
Types of Breast Mesh
There are two primary types of surgical breast mesh used in reconstructive and cosmetic procedures:
Synthetic Mesh
Made from dissolvable polymers designed to provide temporary structural support before gradually being absorbed by the body.
Biologic Mesh
Made from processed human or animal tissue and designed to integrate with the patient’s own tissue to provide long-term support.
Use of Breast Mesh in Breast Surgery
Breast mesh is commonly used in both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgeries.
Over the past decade, the United States has seen approximately:
- 100,000 breast reconstruction procedures annually
- 300,000–350,000 breast augmentation procedures annually
By 2019, surgical mesh products were being used in a majority of implant-based breast reconstruction procedures.
Surgeons often use mesh to help reinforce or support breast tissue during surgery, particularly when a “gap” is created during the procedure.
These gaps can occur when:
- A breast implant or tissue expander is inserted
- Muscle or tissue is removed, such as during certain reconstruction procedures like TRAM flap reconstruction
The mesh is intended to stabilize the area and provide structural support while the body heals.
